1. Academic Interventional Cardiology
I am an interventional cardiologist working in a University and VA setting. I have a part-time appointment (90%), so my hours are generally about 10 hours/day four days a week, 6 hours the fifth day, plus interventional call in rotation with the other interventional faculty. I am in the cath lab 2-3 days per week, in clinic 1 day per week, and doing research and administrative work the remainder of the time.
Things I love about my job:
I get to do a variety of interesting things, have great colleagues, and generally don’t worry too much about whether I’m doing enough cases, or about malpractice issues.
I get to work with and teach fellows.
I work at a great hospital.
Things I dislike about my job:
I make about 1/3-1/2 of a typical private practice income.
I am a salaried employee, not my own boss.
I have to deal with large bureaucracies in order to get anything done at my institution.
I am under pressure to publish and get grants.
