Indications for the Implantation of Antitachycardia Devices (ICD’s)
Emphasis On Judicious Use

On July 14, 2003, members of the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Cardiology (MCACC) met with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) to offer guidance regarding the appropriate indications for implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD).

Quality of care and health care economics were primary motivators for this collaboration and both the representatives of BCBSM and those physicians present agreed that these priorities were appropriate. Eric Bates, President of MCACC, and David Share, MD, MPH, Clinical Director, Center for Health Care Quality and Evaluative Studies for BCBSM jointly called the meeting. The following physicians participated: Stuart Winston, DO (Chair), Claudio Schuger, MD, Frank Pelosi, MD, Timothy Shinn, MD and Arthur Riba, MD, Chair of the MACC Quality Committee.

The dissemination of this document to MCACC members is not an effort intended to supplant the usual process for the adoption of guidelines, either locally or statewide. This group of physicians and the Chapter’s Quality Committee, instead, see this effort as an opportunity to give advice to a major payer and also to underscore for our members that our state society (MCACC) is committed to the highest level of cardiovascular care, and to judicious use of resources available for health care.

The original recommendations were revised in October 2005 to include cardiac resynchronization and data from recent relevant clinical studies.
