Popular traditions and innovative additions will be the hallmarks of the Michigan Chapter’s 20th Anniversary Conference. “Conference Chair Eric Bates, MD has put together an exceptional program of great value and interest to cardologists, fellows, and Cardiac Care Associates across the state," says Chapter President Hank Rosman, MD.

New to the conference program are:
*A pre-conference PAD Symposium featuring case presentations, information on the BMC2 PVI Registry, and a multispecialty session on building a PAD program.
*A forum for interventional cardiologists to discuss issues affecting quality care including: primary PCI in nonsurgical hospitals, clinical research in the cath lab, and same day discharge PCI.

…and true to its traditions are:
*Talks by Michigan’s leading experts including W. Douglas Weaver, MD and Eric Bates, MD with a case-based approach on STEMI care, George Hanzel, MD on Percutaneous Treatment of Valvular Heart Disease, and Robert Lash, MD on Diabetes Management.
*Guests of national renown: David Holmes, MD from Mayo Clinic and Bruce Lindsay, MD from the Cleveland Clinic on the latest controversies in interventional cardiology and electrophysiology respectively.
*The Michigan Cardiology Fellows Society annual Oral Case and Poster Competitions for which fellows and residents from Michigan’s training institutions have vied for the opportunity to participate.
*A breakout tailored to Cardiac Care Associates (RNs, NPs, PAs and PharmDs) focusing on women and cardiovascular disease, non ST Segment Elevation ACS, and classifications, physiological actions, and effects of antiarrhythmics.

Smoke-free Legislation Still Alive

The Michigan Legislature is back to work after summer recess and the August primaries. Now is the time for health advocates to step up the grassroots pressure for comprehensive smoke-free workplace legislation.

HB4163 has a long and storied past (see Help Push the Smoke-free Bill Over the Brink in Summer e-news). As of this date, the Chapter and its health partners in Lansing are advocating for House Speaker Andy Dillon to put it up for a concurrence vote. HB4163 would make all workplaces smoke-free. There would be no exemptions.

The Campaign for Smokefree Air has organized a rally at the Capitol on September 16 at 12:30 p.m. All are welcome to join in this show of support for smoke-free workplaces (RSVP to jason.harder@heart.org), but if you cannot attend the rally, you can support the cause by:
*Calling your representative to urge their support for HB4163.
*Calling Speaker Dillon (517-373-0857) to urge him to put HB4163 up for a concurrence vote.

Critical Action Item:
Participation in Physician Practice Survey
The ACC, the American Medical Association and more than 70 other organizations are conducting a comprehensive multi-specialty survey of America’s physician practices, the results of which the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has indicated will be used to help determine physician payment.

At this time, cardiology has one of the lowest responses of any specialty, and it is crucial that anyone chosen to participate in the survey do so.

The survey firm, dmrkynetec, has been retained to contact randomly selected physicians and practice managers to collect responses. All responses will remain confidential. Please alert your staff regarding your willingness to participate in this survey and the importance of accepting incoming calls, faxes or emails from dmrkynetec. A postcard was mailed to the entire physician sample on June 11.

If you have been selected to participate in this important effort and have any questions about the survey, call 877-816-8940 and ask to speak with one of dmrkynetec’s executive interviewers about the 2008 Physician Practice Information Survey. To see whether you have been selected to participate in the survey, go to https://doanemrwebsc.com/onlinesurveys/amas/.

"Ambassadors" Wanted

The Chapter's innovative state communication network will swing into action next month. Central to this concept is an ambassador for each cardiology practice and institution. The ambassador will briefly communicate state and national ACC issues to the group at their monthly (or bi-monthly) business meetings. Equally important, the ambassadors will then relay the groups' opinions, responses, and issues back to the Chapter and the national ACC.

To volunteer to be the ambassador for your group, contact Alice Betz at alice@accmi.org.

Get the Legislative Lowdown

You can get the latest on Michigan's legislative actions with the Legislative Lowdown.

The Legislative Lowdown is a 15-minute conference call at noon on the last Thursday of every month.

You can call in when there is an issue of particular interest to you or call in every month. Consider it your personal connection to the Michigan's inside politics.

Call the Chapter office (517-663-6622) to receive email notices of Legislative Lowdown dates and the call-in number.
